What we need to remember is our common humanity, that our past doesn’t have to define us, that we are all individuals who are defined by out actions today, not by a group identity to a past that isn’t even accurate and glosses over important context to begin with.

Thank you Thien Ooi. Yourt comment is astounding in its depth and simpicity.

History is a window, not a mirror. It reveals an understanding of the past and what has transpired. It does not act as a mirror to reflect and direct who we are today, nor does it give validation for grievance and agendas.

There then is not here now.

Ms. Stevens' comment on how she sees characteristics of Asian women is racist, degrading and insulting and not even worth repeating in the comments, nor are her descriptors of African women. Often in her writing I see the repetition and exploitation of derogatory labels which are used to inflame readers, when by uttering them she reinforces her own prejudices. This comment from a caucasian born in the African bush, lived around the world and enjoying life with my wife whom, for the sake of this argument, happens to be Asian.
