Illuminating and inspiring. Yours are the kind of articles that should be curated more often rather than the plethora of listicles etc.
Yet I have a bone of contention in what I see as an otherwise astute article, (perhaps these issues are unavoidable as it is meant to be an essay and not a book, which I believe you are more than capable of writing,) it is the somewhat inflammatory statistic mentioned pertaining to '11 million Americans would never vote for a black candidate.'
The source you quote has a very different take than the implication you leave in your reader's mind.
that is, "Americans are just as likely to lend their support to black candidates as to women and Hispanics." This is taken from the same article.
With the scattered, time-restricted minds of contemporary readers, will they all go and check your sources thoroughly, or will they be inflamed by the large number? They will remain unaware of the more than double issues against a gay/lesbian candidate, Mormon, or quadruple socialist candidate. Nor will they be aware that their are more against Hispanics and almost similar numbers against Jews.
If you feed the fire of your worthy article with equality of source and not just with equity to support an argument, we the reader are served a more balanced diet of quality literature. That is surely your aim.
As you are seen as one of the more respected voices on Medium, I wish there had been more consideration in the selection of points taken from the three sources quoted in that particular paragraph.
All good creations, whether it be literature of a bowl of chili, need balance of ingredients.
As others have stated, your input on this platform and respected opinion and decorum you maintain, is one of the few benefits of a Medium membership. Thanks for the enlightenment. K
