Yesterday lives in me fresh and full of wonder

Older couple running through a field of white floating dandelions

She approached, an enchanting mist.
Swirling in fascination, a dream adrift,
floating in joy, she was hope unbound.
She stood before me, beside me, a dream materialized.

Lips quivering, I thought to speak
My tongue, a twisted knot of awe-struck idiocy,
incompetancy and inadequacy pulsing in my veins.
How can one so simple address she that is the sun’s own touch?

Her voice, that first moment, grasped me, stole my breath.
Clattering my soul, racing behind my eyes
to scream and shout, to jump and laugh,
all control was lost — the gift I forever cherish.

The smile in her eyes incapacitated me, set me free.

Still the touch, now forty-five years graced,
takes my elbow, winds around my arm
encircles my heart, warms my belly, confuses me.
Impatient, my eyes, my mind wants to swirl and frolic.

How can her touch dizzy my soul?

Now as the sun sets, her head rests on my shoulder
the sienna sky kindles our spirits,
her love is the soft understanding hand that guides.
Her soul remains the treasure of my world.

Inadequate in myself, I thank the fates that led her to my shores.
With her fortune is forever mine.
