Hello,
Thank you for your response.
There seems to be a disconnection within or discourse. On some points we stand upon the same soap box on others we do not.
The assembly line factory which put a car in 'every middles class home' (those would be white American homes, certainly not the thousands on reservations who are the real American peoples - not immigrants, nor would it be the 600,000 the slaves brought/bought from abroad. I grant slavery was not the invention of the United States, they copied that. Nor were the placing of tens of thousands in forced camps, enclosures, reservations. The decimation of perceived unsavoury groups was copied.)
I suppose as the pharoahs ensalved thousands to build the pyramids to their own self glory by lining them up to roll logs and heave ropes in unision, so too did American business employ thousands to the mind-numbing assembly lines to make America great. Is that your version of great? The Chinese used assembly systems for the Great Wall, also a soul destroying monument to self.
But you are correct, the US was the first in the race to perfect the atomic bomb. This was possible thanks to Otto Hahn - a German.
They were the first, and the only, to drop an atomic bomb - twice. They dropped it on a civilian population killing over 200,000 while the Japanese government had been suing for peace for months. It was a monetary decision. Thankfully no nation has copied this attribute - thouigh no war crimes for the murder of civilians were ever pursued. The March 9th fire bombings across Japan which killed more than the two atomic bombs combined, like the vaporizations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have not been copied. Perhaps the Americans were copying the Dresden bombings which copied Coventry, just on a grander scale.
America came to the rescue of the Chinese? I cannot believe an educated writer such as yourself would use such base of argument. The League of Nations was restricting Japanese shipping tonnage and in this way the voracious nations of the West (not just the US - Britan, France, the Netherlands were also players) wanted to limit the reach of the Japanese who were starving. In this way they could grasp the vast resources of the south China seas for themselves. Every nation has an agenda.
Bridges? I have drove over them of course. Suspension theory do you really believe mathmatics of that scale have a nationality? Oops back to Otto Hahn the German, Einstein too I guess. Oh dear, then there is Marie Curie the Pole.
Elvis, he (singular) was a wonder but then he based his music on Gospel and drew from the roots of music which was not 'American.' The Beatles, hmm who were they? They copied Elvis? Never. I am thankful that the Germans with Bach, Brahms, and Liszt to name but a few, do not demonize the Austrians for Mozart. The people of those nations enjoy the music, are proud of it, but do no claim themselves as the inventor and primary source to be copied by lesser nationalities.
Next to the atom bomb perhaps another first for the United States would be using chemical products on civilian populations. The hypocracy in this is staggering. Agent Orange sprayed on villages as a chemical defoliant to starve villagers is the same as the supposed 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' which allowed, in America's eyes, the invasion of another nation. The persecution of Saddam Hussein was not reflected back to the `Vietnam War.' Few have attempted to copy that American first either.
America did copy the Soviet Union by invading Afghanistan. But they also followed the Soviets in the space race to put a man in space, Yuri Gagarin, and are heavily reliant on Russian transport ships since their shuttle fleet was mothballed. Martin/ Marrietta were true American inventors though Martin I believe was the child of immigrants.
Now the NASA program relies on the means of other nationalities again. Space X and SouthAfrican/ Canadian Elon Musk is making the space age possible as well as reviving the dead, bled dry, American car industry. Perhaps the assembly plants and empire of Henry Ford can be rescued by Indian, Chines, Japanese or German innvoation and financing?
The vapid, money-driven productions that spew from Hollywood are not worthy of comment.
Democracy, in all its forms, is an evolving entity and is by no means American. If you believe that the supposed checks, the 'Electoral College System' is democratic, when only a few States hold those to impartiality, then deception is rampant.
The Marshall Plan, a wonderful means to rebuild many European countries just as was the assistance provided to the Japanese economy through SCAP. However to think this was an open, magnaminous hand would be absurd. In all confrontations money and greed are the driving force. Europe benefitted and so did the American economy.
The internet? Tim Berners-Lee a British scientist working at CERN ( I believe).
The point is, any nationality can attribute various achievements to the development of mankind, to its evolutionary progress. The distasteful fact is that it is from citizens in the United States that claims of superiority are so often shouted.
Even King Solomon knew there is nothing new under the sun.
In closing this pleasant interaction of our words, I wonder if the almost 50% who voted for Trump, are those who shout from the roof tops of their own glory? Is Trump in truth the epitome of the American society? Many would say he is; racist, mysoginistic, bellicose, litigious, a braggard, a draft dodging coward, a bully, unsophisticated, lacking in verbal integrity (or integrity of any kind), etc. Is this the reflection of half of the population and does the other half stand in fear of their own reflection?
The wall you speak of may in fact be a mirror. The mirror may cause the United States society to look back on itself and reassess the characteristics or personality of its nationhood. Hopefully with humility, not the hubris of Uncle Sam's pointing finger.
