“What an utter a disaster, these days are,” my mother said.

I assumed she was speaking of the current racial conflicts gripping several, but not all, cities around the globe.

“It swept through with absolute impunity, crashing, destroying property, and with no regard to whom or what stood in its way.”

At 86, my mother is still a bit of an upstart. She still drives (usually at 30kmh,) she protests, and she lets people hear her thoughts, albeit in a very apologetic, white-haired, shuffling way, but without any blurred edges.

“You’d think divine interventions would some how factor into this episode,” she rumbled.

“Yes, mom.” I didn’t want to be condescending, but I could see she was about to launch into a rant.

“It is a mess, an unconscionable mess.”

“Well, if it were biblical, I suppose one would say, ‘let not the sins of the father be visited upon the son.’”

The white eyebrows furrowed. “What are you on about?” She headed for the kitchen.
