America is a different kettle of fish to Europe where touring in a camper van (particularily in Germany) is common and catered to. My wife and I sold our restaurants and toured Europe for a year. We've parked on London bridge to watch the world cup and cooked bacon and eggs during the game then went to the Hayward gallery to see Dali and Picasso. Parked in front of Munster Cathedral and had tea, crossed on the train beds from France to England and back many times, up to Scandinavia, down through Eastern Europe and Spain, always refilling with wine in France. We did this with our Great Dane in a very old Fiat Camper van. Bought for 5500 GBP and sold for 4750 with a new clutch. We would do it again in an instant. Life on a tenner -- a baguette, cheese and wine, with your lover and a dog seeing the world. There is no better life. Bravo to you for giving it a go, it is not everyone's cup of tea. But give it another crack. Those who venture first onto the dance floor always find it awkward but become the bravest of souls.
